A Cowboy and Me

Cowboy’s Language

August 2, 2020 by Tammy Gilbert

It just dawned on me that I have blogged 175 stories about me and Cowboy. Thats a 175 Sundays that you and I have spent together. I’m pretty sure that makes us bff’s. That’s a lot of words y’all. And a lot of making fun of Cowboy, or as he would say “pokin fun”. Which, by the way, I enjoy immensely. I almost feel bad sometimes because it comes so easily. But that feeling only lasts a hot minute and then I’m right back at it. I actually enjoy it so much that my mouth starts to salivate just thinking about the different ways I can “poke fun” at him. Kind of like it does for chocolate.

Speaking of chocolate… I’m thinking that my next road trip adventure needs to be a trek across country to sample chocolate from the best chocolatiers in the world. Wouldn’t that be a hoot? It would be the most delicious “research adventure” ever! But, I’m pretty sure that the trip back would require shopping for clothes in larger sizes. What we women do for the name of research. On the bright side, cheetah print comes in every size there is. So no worries there.

Anyhoo, let’s get back on track with what I’m blogging about on this 176th Sunday.

Stories are made up of words (duh). When Cowboy speaks, his words or phrases do not sound like when I say them and sometimes I need to chat with Google about what in the heck just came out of that handsome mouth of his. Google and I have each other’s back. She helps me stay one step ahead of life.

I was having a conversation with a friend and she said that the older her husband became, the more his Texas drawl got. Sweet Jesus, you would think that after spending almost four decades with a person, you would have them figured out.

So, I thought I would do some research to see what Cowboy might throw at me in the future years. I’ve heard most of these words of phrases before however, my definition did not sync with theirs.

Here we go-

Ace-high ~ first class, respected. (I thought it was a card game)
Directly ~ soon.
A hog-killin’ time ~ a real good time. (sounds horrible)
A lick and a promise ~ to do haphazardly. (nope, not going there)
Balled up ~ confused. (I thought it meant in pain)
Bend an elbow ~ have a drink. (exercising?)
Bender ~ drunk. (A new word for fender?)
Come a cropper ~ come to ruin, fail, or fall heavily. (Dust cropper?)
Dicker ~ barter, trade. (Poke fun at?)
Fetch ~ bring, give. (play with dogs)
Soda water~ carbonated drink
Chores~ to do list.
Flush ~ prosperous, rich (the toilet?)
Get a wiggle on ~ hurry. (sounds like dancing to me)
Got the bulge ~ have the advantage. (ate too much chocolate)
Namby-pamby ~ sickly. (what?)
Light (or lighting) a shuck ~ to get the hell out of here in a hurry. (what in the world?!)
Knocked into a cocked hat ~ fouled up, rendered useless. (I haven’t a clue)
Gully washer ~a big rain. (a yard game?)

And my most favorite of Cowboy’s sayings-
EENCH~ inch, how many eenches of rain did we get?
…cracks me up every single time.

’til next Sunday y’all- 𝔁𝓸, 𝓣π“ͺ𝓢𝓢𝔂 β₯
