As I’ve mentioned before, Cowboy & I live in Pidcoke, Texas (population…small). We named our little piece of paradise 4G but sometimes I jokingly refer to it as Green Acres. For those of you that know us; you know exactly why. Ironically Cowboy used to watch “Green Acres” in college, with his friends. He went to Tarleton State University (a country college for a country kind of guy). I’m trying to picture him in his dorm room, with his cowboy friends, watching Green Acres. Let’s just sit and ponder that for a minute…
“Green Acres is the place to be, Country living is the life for me”! (You’re welcome for putting that little jingle in your head. You’ll be humming to that song all day)! I wonder if Cowboy ever thought that he would marry someone more like Zsa Zsa Gabor than a cowgirl or maybe a Rodeo Queen?
I do like the fact that the Rodeo Queen gets to wear a hat, tiara AND a sash. I think every girl should have a tiara of her own and maybe a tutu to go with it. And I know that this will surprise ya, BUT I have worn a cowboy hat before…and boots. I was asked to model in a fashion show. My western attire consisted of a hat, a western dress and boots. I fell in love with those boots! They had rhinestones on them!
Rodeo Queens & Cowgirls ride horses…me not so much! I think horses are majestic animals. Beautiful and graceful; I am definitely neither of those when riding one. When I first met Cowboy he had a horse. We would spend time at his barn, brushing and feeding it. We had the deepest conversations at that barn…
ME: Your horse is beautiful, what is it’s name?
COWBOY: Horse.
ME: Yes, what is your horse’s name?
COWBOY: Her name is Horse.
ME: Okay, let’s try this again cowboy…you named your horse HORSE?
COWBOY: Yes, MY HORSE is named HORSE!
ME: Alrighty then, I’m just gonna throw this out there… I bet your dog’s name is DOG?
COWBOY: Yep, how’d you guess?
Yep, that’s my Cowboy…real original.
He invited me to go riding one weekend. I told him that sounded like a fun way to spend a Sunday!
COWBOY: Have you ever ridden before?
ME: Oh sure, plenty of times.
What I didn’t tell him was that my “plenty of times” totaled twice. Yes… my horse riding abilities were limited (very limited…so limited that if you added both times together it would give you a total sum of 1 hour). But I have watched plenty of westerns so Ive seen it done before. Back in those days, cowgirls wore dresses and rode side saddled. I won’t be sporting a dress so I’ve got this! AND I considered this to be a challenge. We Morales’ NEVER back down from a challenge…no siree!
We were to meet at the barn at 2:00. So I got there right on time…at 2:15. Cowboy looked at me and asked what I was wearing? I said “what do you mean?” He said “What are you wearing on your feet?” I looked down at my shoes and said “they’re rhinestoned flipflops, aren’t they cute? I went to buy boots but I thought these were cuter!” He chuckled and said “there’s a reason you wear boots when you ride horses and why are you wearing shorts?” I said “they matched my cute flipflops”! Duh! Again he chuckled (which is becoming an annoying habit with him) and said “ok cowgirl, we’ll see how cute they are in an hour”. He hoisted me up on that big beautiful horse (who’s name is HORSE, in case you didn’t catch on the first time) and off we went. Well….it only took 15 minutes and this cowgirl realized 3 things:
1. It takes less than 15 minutes to lose a flipflop or two while riding a horse (rhinestones & all).
2. Shorts are the WORST thing to wear when riding a horse. My thighs were so chafed I had to slather diaper rash ointment on them for a week!
3. I am NOT a cowgirl but Cowboy loves me anyway.
